WEST BOYLSTON/HOLDEN – Pentti O. Elolampi, 78, a resident of the Briarwood Retirement Community and formerly of Holden, died peacefully on Tuesday, April 14, 2015 at UMass Memorial Healthcare-University Campus, following a brief illness. Pentti was born in Kurkijoki, Finland, son of the late Lauri and Anna (Klements) Elolampi.

Pentti arrived in New York as a 24-year-old immigrant, speaking no English. He later relocated to Connecticut and then Worcester to pursue his Bachelor’s and Master's Degrees in Mechanical Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. He met his future wife, Phyllis, in the Worcester Finnish community. They married in 1968 and lived in Worcester and then Holden for 35 years before moving to Briarwood in 2011. Following his graduation, Pentti began a 37-year career with Norton Company (Saint Gobain) which included extensive international travel. He was an intricate part of a joint venture project that established Norton’s first factory in Shanghai, China. Pentti shared his love of travel with his wife and together they toured the world including regularly visiting family in Finland. During his retirement, Pentti volunteered for the Wachusett Food Pantry, the Worcester County Food Bank and at the Holden Senior Center. He was an avid cross country and downhill skier, and loved listening to Finnish music. Pentti was a devoted Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots fan, and enjoyed putting his engineering mind to use in the Briarwood woodworking shop.

He leaves his beloved wife of 46 years, Phyllis V. (Nisula) Elolampi; his two children, Susan A. Elolampi of New York, NY and Brian D. Elolampi of Belmont, MA; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. He was predeceased by his six siblings.
