Pauline M. (Smith) Stoddard

June 14, 1915 — October 12, 2011

HOLDEN – Pauline M. (Smith) Stoddard, 96, of Frederickson Avenue, passed away peacefully while in the presence of her family in Holden Nursing Home on Wednesday, October 12, 2011. Her husband of 36 years, Oliver Edwin Stoddard, died in 1977.

Pauline was born in Ashland, Maine, the daughter of Harry H. and Minnie (Sutherland) Smith, and moved to Worcester at the age of 14 where she lived until moving to Holden in 1953. She was a graduate of North High School and earned an Associate’s degree from the Becker Business School. She was an executive secretary for 10 years at Lee Hagenson Investments in Worcester retiring to raise her son.

She was a member of St. Francis Episcopal Church in Holden and a former member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Worcester. Pauline was active with the Stella Chapter #190, Order of the Eastern Star, holding several offices. She was also a member of the Chaffin Women’s club for 20 years holding both the office of secretary and recording secretary.

Pauline leaves her son, Peter E. Stoddard and his wife Jan of Holden; and two grandsons, James and Michael Stoddard, both of Fitchburg. Two brothers, Weldon “Wed” Smith and Robert “Red” Smith, predeceased her.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 3 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, October 15, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. A private graveside service will be held at Rural Cemetery in Worcester. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations may be made to the Massachusetts Commission for the Blind, 48 Boylston Street, Boston, MA 02116-4718.
