STERLING - Paul F. Kroll, 86, of Sterling, died Thursday, February 22, 2018 at UMass Hospital in Worcester after a fall. He leaves his devoted and loving family, his wife of 49 years, Mary Ellen (McNamara) Kroll and two daughters, Kathleen Kroll of Atlanta, Georgia, and SueEllen Kroll of Providence, Rhode Island; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers and two sisters: Thaddeus Krol, John Krol, Rita Juges, and Cecilia Hrichak. Paul was born in Worcester, the son of Anthony J. and Maryan (Ziemba) Krol. After graduating from Commerce High School in Worcester, Mr. Kroll obtained his B.S. from Suffolk University in 1957, where he was a proud member of the Half Century Club, and received his M.Ed. from Worcester State College in 1962. After starting his public education career as a certified teacher, Mr. Kroll became principal at West Boylston Elementary Schools where he served from 1957-1981. He was a former member of the Massachusetts Teachers Association, National Education Association, and Massachusetts Elementary Principals Association. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Association of School Supervisors and Directors, and as an Officer for the Massachusetts Association for Supervisors and Curriculum Development. After retiring from education, Mr. Kroll worked for several more years in sales for Merkert and All East Enterprises. Mr. Kroll was active in many civic, religious, and social organizations. He was a member of St. Richard of Chichester Church in Sterling, where he was past Finance Board member for its Booster Club. He was also a member of the School Committees for Sterling and Wachusett Regional, Past President of the West Boylston Rotary Club, served on the Diocesan’s Pastoral Council and Diaconate Advisory Board, and was listed in Who’s Who in the East. He served in the Naval Reserves from 1948 to 1960. Mr. Kroll was also an avid fan of Boston sports teams, and was an adept golfer and racquet ball player who greatly enjoyed his memberships at Oak Hill Country Club, Worcester YMCA, and Worcester Fitness. Mr. Kroll loved taking day trips with his family to visit historical and cultural places, cooking for his family, and especially going out to eat to try new restaurants. He also enjoyed attending the thoroughbred races in Saratoga Springs each summer and working on his lawn. Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Paul’s family from 4 to 7 pm Wednesday, February 28, at the Miles-Sterling Funeral and Tribute Center, 100 Worcester Road (Rte. 12) Sterling. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am on Thursday, March 1 at St. Richard’s Church, 4 Bridge Street, Sterling. Burial will be Hillside Cemetery in Sterling.
