Biography

PAXTON – Patrick J. Gillis, 66, of Paxton, passed away peacefully after a long illness with his loving wife by his side on Sunday, February 5, 2017.
Patrick was born in Ayer, a son of the late Charles P. and Mary (Dooley) Gillis and was raised in Fitchburg.  After graduating from Fitchburg High School, he then earned a Bachelor’s Degree in History and Fine Arts and a Master’s Degree in Theology from Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, MD.  Following his teaching position with the Diocese of Worcester, Pat embarked on what would become a more than 30-year career with St. John’s High School in Shrewsbury where he became the Department Chair of Religious Studies and Fine Arts.  He was an invested teacher in the St. John's Community, serving as moderator to many student clubs and activities over the years. He retired in 2009 due to an illness.
Pat will be forever missed by his beloved wife of 37 years, Ann E. (Jackson) Gillis; his three brothers, Peter C. Gillis of Torrington, CT, Rusty C. Gillis and his wife, Lee of Cornwall, NY, James O. Gillis and his wife, Joan, of Hilton Head, SC; his two sisters, Eileen Greathouse and her husband, Bill of Foster City, CA, and Teresa Sugrue of Lunenburg; his mother-in-law, Ella P. Jackson of Salem, NH; a sister-in-law, Carol  J. Poole of Salem, NH; many nieces and nephews including Julie Bengyak and her husband, Daniel of Cornwall, NY, Mary Gillis of New York City, NY, Daniel Gillis of Cornwall, NY, Meaghan and Lindsey Gillis of Hilton Head, SC,, Brendan Sugrue of Maine, Sara Ihle of Manchester, NH; and two grandnephews, Will and Brady Bengyak of Cornwall, NY.  In addition to his parents, Pat was predeceased by his father-in-law, Harold A. Jackson.
