HOLDEN – Patricia G. (Sweeney) Johnson, 82, formerly of 858 Main Street, Holden, and most recently of 30 Julio Drive, Shrewsbury, died peacefully at home on Wednesday, October 19, 2005, after an illness.
She leaves her husband of 55 years, Rogers P. Johnson; two daughters, Annie E. Dodson and her husband R. Craig of Shrewsbury and Sarah K. Connor and her husband Steven J. of Greenfield; a brother, James Sweeney of Detroit; and six grandchildren, Trevor, Samuel, Benjamin, Shaun, Matthew and Tara. She was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on February 19, 1923, daughter of Captain James M. and Mabel H. (Greisbach) Sweeney, was raised in Detroit and lived 33 years in Holden. She was a graduate of Oberlin College and attended graduate school at Boston University.
While living in Holden, Patricia was active on the School Committee from 1973-78, serving as Chairperson from 1976-77. She was a member of the Holden Capital Planning Committee from 1976-78 and a member of the Holden Democratic Committee. She was Director of the Westborough Branch of the YWCA from 1978 until retiring in 1987 and had previously been the Director of the Head Start Program of the YWCA in Worcester. After retiring Patricia went back to work part time for the Worcester Committee on Housing and Homelessness where she was instrumental in the organization of the yearly Walk for the Homeless. She also worked for the Abby Kelley Foster House where she spearheaded one of the Country’s most successful nonprofit fundraisers, Abby’s House Pins. In her early career Patricia was a reporter for Time Life Magazine and later the Director of Adult Education at Brandeis University. She also worked for UNICEF, the United Way and volunteered for the American Red Cross and the League of Women Voters.
The funeral service for Mrs. Johnson will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 22, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, October 21, in the funeral home.
