HOLDEN/WORCESTER – Helen Lillian (Johnson) Otterson, 87, formerly of Holden and Briarwood Circle, Worcester, died Monday, February 12, 2007, in the Radius Healthcare, Braintree, after an illness.
Her husband of 60 years, Paul S. Otterson, died in 2002. She leaves two sons, Gary W. Otterson of Readfield, Maine and Philip A. Otterson of Littleton; a daughter, Loreen Curtis of Weymouth; a brother, Donald Johnson of Shrewsbury; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A brother, Ernest Johnson, predeceased her. She was born in Riverdale, Maryland, the daughter of Helmer and Lillian W. (Werme) Johnson, and lived many years in Worcester and 53 years in Holden until recently moving to Braintree. She was a graduate of South High School class of 1938 where she was vice president of her class. She was also a graduate of the Worcester City Hospital School of Nursing and a loyal member of their Alumni Association.
Mrs. Otterson was a Registered Nurse at Worcester City Hospital for many years, retiring in 1972. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and its Ruth Circle. She was great cook and enjoyed trying new recipes in her kitchen. She enjoyed watching and participating in sports including ice skating, swimming, tennis and walking. She was a Girl Scout leader and was affectionately known as the “Butterfly Lady” and for her great sense of humor.
A memorial service for Mrs. Otterson will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, February 16, in the Trinity Lutheran Church, 73 Lancaster Street, Worcester. Interment will be private in Worcester County Memorial Park, 217 Richards Avenue, Paxton. The family requests that memorial donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Massachusetts Chapter, 311 Arsenal Street, Watertown, MA 02472. Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden is directing arrangements.
