Oscar R. Schmidt

SOUTH LANCASTER - Oscar R. Schmidt, 99, of Bigelow Road died peacefully at home on Thursday, July 18, 2013.
Mr. Schmidt was born and raised in Stafford Springs, CT, son of Herman and Elfrieda (Schneider) Schmidt. He was a 1937 graduate of Atlantic Union College and received his master's degree in library science from Syracuse University in 1950. During World War II, he taught at the Old Lyme Military Academy in Connecticut and from 1943-1951, Union Springs Academy in Union Springs, New York. He worked at Atlantic Union College for 35 years, retiring as a Professor of English and Director of the Library in 1986. After retirement he taught English as a second language at Atlantic Union College until the age of 92.
Mr. Schmidt was a member of The College Church of Seventh-day Adventists in South Lancaster.
His beloved wife of 62 years, Madeline L. (Roeder) Schmidt, died in 2006. He leaves a son, Randy L. Schmidt and his wife Carolyn of Sterling; four grandchildren, Sheri and Lloyd Trueblood, Lloyd’s wife Melissa and Adam and Jenna Schmidt; nephews and nieces. A daughter, Lucille L. Trueblood and a sister, Mildred Hartman, predeceased him.
A memorial service honoring Mr. Schmidt's life will be celebrated on what would have been his 100th birthday, on June 1, 2014, at The College Church of Seventh-day Adventists, 337 Main St., South Lancaster. Donations in his memory may be made to The College Church of Seventh-day Adventists, P.O. Box 871, South Lancaster, MA 01561-0877 or to the Lancaster Public Library. Funeral arrangements are under the care of Miles-Sterling Funeral and Tribute Center, 100 Worcester Rd., Sterling.
