HOLDEN – Ethel Olson Larson Gully, 90, of Holden, passed away peacefully at Sterling Healthcare Center, Sterling, on Tuesday, March 3, 2009 after years of bravely facing the challenges of Alzheimer's Disease head on and with dignity. She was predeceased by her parents, Eric E. Olson, Sr. and Clara Linnea (Pearson) Olson. Ethel lost her loving husband of 30 years, Eric Arthur Larson, in 1972.
She is survived by her two daughters, Sandra L. De Ciccio and her husband, Donald of Boylston, and Linda D. Larson of Sterling; a sister, Edith L. Carlson of Worcester; a brother, Eric E. Olson and his wife Linda of North Myrtle Beach, SC; 5 step-children, Kate Higginbotham and her husband James, Kevin Gully and his wife Donna, Christine Nicoletta and her husband Tom, Tony Gully and his wife Deanna, and Andrew Gully and his wife Jackie; 11 step-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her second husband, William T. Gully.
After graduating from school in Welwyn Garden City, England, Ethel worked for Norton Company in that city. When her family returned to Worcester, she worked for Norton Company in Worcester. After raising her two daughters, Ethel returned to work as secretary to the Director of Nursing at Holden Hospital. Upon retiring, Ethel and Bill spent many winters in Naples, Florida, summers in York Beach, Maine, and fall and spring in their Holden home.
Ethel enjoyed cooking, entertaining, singing in choir and the Charminades, traveling, gardening, knitting, and golf. Her life revolved around her family and her extended family and friends. She always had a pleasant smile for anyone with whom she came in contact. She loved all animals, especially her two favorite dogs, Roxy and Rudi.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 4 to 6 p.m. on Friday, March 6th in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. The funeral service for Ethel will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 7th in the Zion Lutheran Church, 41 Whitmarsh Avenue, Worcester. Burial will follow in Worcester County Memorial Park, 217 Richards Avenue, Paxton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Massachusetts Chapter, 311 Arsenal Street, Watertown, MA 02472, or a charity of one's choice.
