HUBBARDSTON/CHELMSFORD – Niels-Peter Hansen, 66, of 42 Geordie Lane, Hubbardston, died Thursday, December 4, 2008 in UMass Memorial Healthcare, Worcester, after an extended illness.

He leaves his beloved wife of 43 years, Deborah A. (Howard) Hansen; two sons, Peter N. Hansen of New York City and Howard C. Hansen and his wife Mayrena of Gardner; a daughter, Margaret G. Germagian and her husband Mark of Hubbardston; three grandchildren, Gregory, Alison and Seth; a brother, Frithjof Carl Hansen and his wife Theresa of Beverly; two sisters, Christiane Hansen-Mitev of Beverly Farms and Margaret Hansen Knowlton and her husband Thomas of Beverly; a sister-in-law, Sr. Simone of the Evangelical Sisters of Mary of Australia (Priscilla Jane Howard); and nieces and nephews, Kirsten Carr, Bettina Sullivan, Emily Osborne, Liselotte Rivera, Sylvia Klebsch, Paul Hansen-Mitev, F. Carl Hansen, Kelli Wesner and Daniel Knowlton. A sister, Karin Hansen Carr, predeceased him. He was born in Zehlendorf, Germany, son of Frithjof Niels Carl Hansen and Dr. Liselotte (Lachmann) Hansen. He was raised in Beverly Farms and lived 25 years in Chelmsford before moving to Hubbardston three years ago.

Peter was a graduate of Beverly High School and earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from Gordon College in Wenham and later earned his Master's degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He was a U.S. Navy veteran during the Vietnam War as an instructor at the Electrical Engineering School at Great Lakes, Illinois. Peter was a research engineer and worked in the Astronomy Research Facility at the University of MA in Amherst; at Honeywell Corp. in Lexington; and at Exergen in Watertown. He was a member of the American Society of Spectroscopy, American Optical Society, IEEE and he was listed in Who's Who in Physics in America.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, December 11th, at the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden. The funeral service for Peter will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, December 12th, in the Heritage Bible Chapel, 182 Brooks Station Road, Princeton. A reception will follow the service at the church. Burial will be private in Beverly Farms Cemetery, Beverly. Flowers may be sent or donations be made to the Heritage Bible Chapel, Building or Mission Trips Funds, P.O. Box 1096, Princeton, MA 01541.
