S Susan N. (Hallowell) Smiley

STERLING – Susan N. (Hallowell) Smiley, 59, of Kendall Hill Road, passed away on Wednesday, February 10, 2010 in Clinton Hospital.

She leaves her husband of 10 years, Robert Smiley; a step-son, Robert Ian Smiley of St. Augustine, Florida; a step-daughter, E. Heather Papandrea of Sterling; two brothers, Joseph W. Hallowell of Ashburnham and David C. Hallowell of Meriden, CT; two sisters, Diane Peura of Shirley and Helen Chesney of San Diego, CA; and three step-grandchildren. She was special “Aunt Susie” to 10 nephews and nieces and 11 great-nephews and nieces.

Susan was born on September 12, 1950 in Santa Barbara, California, a daughter of Henry C. and Doris (Pointras) Hallowell III. She was raised in Shirley, graduated from Ayer High School and was a 1970 graduate of the Bryant & Stratton College in Boston. Susan lived in Boston, 10 years in Hawaii and 10 years in Sterling. For the last 7 years, she was the bookkeeper at Bestway of New England, Inc. in Lancaster, retiring in 2007. Previously she worked at Carlson Orchards in Harvard and Singer Co. in Hawaii. She was a member of the First Church in Sterling where she served as Treasurer for several years. Susan enjoyed traveling, crafts, bridge, scrabble and going south.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 2 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, February 20th, in the Miles-Sterling Funeral Home, 100 Worcester Road (Rte. 12), Sterling. Her funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, February 21st, in the First Church in Sterling, 6 Meeting House Hill Road, Sterling. Burial will be private in Quincy. In lieu of flowers, donations in Susan’s memory may be made to the First Church in Sterling Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 40, Sterling, MA 01564; or the Town of Sterling Fire Department, Ambulance Fund, P.O. Box 515, Sterling, MA 01564.
