Richard N. Goodnow

SHREWSBURY - Richard N. Goodnow, 78, formerly of Princeton, died Saturday, August 7, 2010 at Beaumont Rehab & Skilled Nursing Center, Northborough after a long illness.

He leaves his wife of 55 years, Georgienne (Durkee) Goodnow; a daughter, Sharon A. Samuelson, her husband Dana and their children, Corey and Tyler of Westborough; three sons, Steven G. Goodnow, his wife Janna (Christensen) and their children, Ashley and Brandon of Holden; Roger N. Goodnow of St. Petersburg, Russia; Richard J. Goodnow, his fiancée Lisa Pontbriand and Rick's son Kenny of Hubbardston; two brothers, Judson "Jay" M. Goodnow Jr. of Princeton and Robert E. Goodnow of West Boylston; many nephews and nieces.

Dick was born in Portland, Maine the son of Judson M. and Marjorie N. (Needham) Goodnow Sr. and lived in Princeton, West Boylston, Boylston and Sterling before moving to Shrewsbury in 2009. He graduated from Cushing Academy in 1949 as class president and he attended Clark University where he was elected captain of the schools tennis team. He later transferred to the University of Vermont until he was called into service during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy in 1957.

Mr. Goodnow was a partner with Huntington, Goodnow, Conners, Inc. Insurance Brokerage for many years and later became president and sole owner. Their specialty was manufacturing and commercial insurance. Dick was honored by Kemper Insurance Co. as a member of their Circle of Excellence, and by CNA Insurance Co. as a High Performance Agent. Other interests included golf and travel. Richard belonged to the Harbor Ridge Yacht & Country Club in Palm City, Florida and the Worcester Country Club, each for 20 years. Dick also supported memberships at Tower Hill Horticultural Society, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and had a lifetime membership in the Scottish Rites Consistory of Masons.

A memorial service for Dick will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 14th, in the First Congregational Church of Shrewsbury, 19 Church Road, Shrewsbury. Burial will be private at Hillside Cemetery in Sterling at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Mass Chapter, 311 Arsenal Street, Watertown, MA 02472. Miles-Sterling Funeral Home, 100 Worcester Road, Sterling is directing arrangements.
