STERLING – Nancy Elizabeth (Patterson) Doherty, 74, passed away at home surrounded by her loving family on Sunday, March 30, 2014 after a long illness. She was born on September 7, 1939, to John and Grace (MacAlpine) Patterson of Newton and graduated from Newton High School and Chandler Secretarial College as a medical secretary.
Nancy, with her husband, Norman, fostered more than 162 babies and children over 43 years, specializing in infants with complex medical conditions. She also provided daycare for many children in town. She was an EMT for the town of Sterling for many years as well as Wachusett Mountain. She was also a first aid and CPR instructor. Nancy played the accordion, piano and organ and was the organist for several years at St. Richard of Chichester Church.
She loved spending her summers in Shelburne, Nova Scotia with much loved family and friends and continued to do so. Nancy held marksmanship badges, took flying lessons, enjoyed sipping wine by the campfire and was able to travel to Mexico on a whale watch just last year, the highlight of which was touching the whales. In her spare time, Nancy loved reading, dancing and cooking for her large family. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
Nancy will be greatly missed by her husband of 51 years, Norman Doherty; six children, Laura Doherty of Sterling, Kenneth and his wife, Megen Doherty of Southbridge, Deborah and her husband, Kevin Zangarine of Lancaster, Norman and his wife, Michelle Doherty of Millbury, Amanda Doherty and Alexander Doherty both of Sterling; six grandchildren, Anthony, Kenneth, Crystal, Thomas, Ryan and Benjamin; a great-granddaughter, Mariah; and several nephews, nieces and cousins. She was predeceased by her son, Timothy in 1992 and a brother, Kenneth in 2013.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 2, in the Miles-Sterling Funeral and Tribute Center, 100 Worcester Road, Sterling. Funeral services for Nancy will be held from the funeral home on Thursday, April 3, with a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in St. Richard of Chichester Church, 4 Bridge Street, Sterling. A private committal service will be held at a later date at Hillside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Town of Sterling Ambulance Fund, P.O.
