JEFFERSON- Nancy (Burns) Owens, 71, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 1, 2017 surrounded by her family.
She was a graduate of Catherine Laboure School of Nursing and Worcester State College. She was a retired nurse who worked at UMass Worcester for over 30 years.
Nancy’s life was centered on family and community. She was an active member of St. Mary’s Parish in Jefferson.
Holden Grange has chosen her for the 2017 Community Citizen of the year based on her volunteer service at St. Mary’s, the Girl Scouts, Holden Recreation Department, Holden CERT and Holden Senior Center.
Nancy was a Girl Scout most of her life. She was an enthusiastic, patient Girl Scout leader as well as Town Service Unit member. For more than ten years she served on Montachusett GS Council Gold Award Committee, which fit as she earned the First Class Award, which was the highest award when she was a girl. On the committee she was a mentor to over 50 Gold Award candidates on their journey. Nancy was awarded the Thanks Badge for outstanding service.
Nancy volunteered at the Holden Senior Center in the SERVE program taking blood pressures and was recognized in 2016 with other nurses as Volunteer of the Year.
She was recently elected as a member of the Board of Directors of the Friends of the Holden Council on Aging.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Florence Burns of Malden. She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Robin Owens of Jefferson; her daughter, Laura Simoes and her husband, Todd of Beverly; her daughter, Patricia Flores of Jefferson; her grandchildren, Sydney Simoes and Ramsey Flores; her sister, Ellen Peterson and her husband, James of Westborough; and her brother, Richard Burns and his wife, Priscilla of Malden.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 4 to 8 pm on Friday, May 5 at the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am on Saturday, May 6 at St. Mary's Church, 114 Princeton St., Jefferson. Burial will follow at Grove Cemetery, Holden.
