Nancy E. (Carl) Johnson

LANCASTER – Nancy E. (Carl) Johnson, 88, passed away on Monday, September 10, 2018, under the loving care of her family and the dedicated staff at Clinton Hospital. She was born in Clinton, the daughter of Alfred and Irma (Sontag) Carl and lived most of her life in Lancaster.


She is predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Ernest L. Johnson who died in 2008. She leaves two daughters, Charlene A. McNamara of Lancaster and Sandra L. Sauta and her husband Thomas of Stow; two sons, Gary D. Johnson and his wife Grace of Lunenburg and Richard E. Johnson and his wife Cyndi of York, Maine; one brother, Alfred Carl of West Boylston; three sisters, Betty Moffitt and Irene Johnson of Falmouth and Carolyn Gibbons of Clinton; seven grandchildren, Peter, Paul, Mark, Michael, Meredith, Daniel and Catherine; eleven great-grandchildren, Samantha, Matthew, Kelley, Erin, Madelyne, Daniel, Adriana, Angelo, Madison, Makenna, and Michaela; nephews and nieces. She is predeceased by her sister Miriam (Carl) Shaw and son-in-law Owen McNamara.


Mrs. Johnson graduated from Clinton High School in 1948 and received her Registered Nurse designation in 1951 from Worcester Hahnemann Hospital School of Nursing. She worked as an RN at Hahnemann and Clinton Hospitals and was an active member of the Hahnemann Alumni Association. In addition she worked as a private duty nurse while raising her family. She retired from Hahnemann in 1984 but continued to work as a nurse for Town of Lancaster Social Services for many years, and often volunteered for the American Red Cross Blood Services Mobile Unit. She was a member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Acton and was an active member of the Lutheran Women Missionary League. She spent many years as a member of the Ladies Aid Society at Trinity Lutheran Church in Clinton. She was an avid baker and enjoyed visiting those who were sick, in hospitals or in nursing homes. Friends and neighbors never hesitated to call on “Nurse Nancy” for her medical advice and attention. Her pride and joy were her family and friends and she will be dearly missed by all.


Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Nancy’s family from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 12th at the Miles - Sterling Funeral and Tribute Center, 100 Worcester Rd. (Rte. 12), Sterling. A funeral service honoring her life will be held at 11 a.m. at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, 472 Massachusetts Avenue, Acton. Burial will be private at Eastwood Cemetery in Lancaster.
