Muriel F. (Norton) Sweeney Johnston

July 12, 1922 — February 22, 2013

HOLDEN - Muriel F. (Norton) Sweeney Johnston, 90, passed peacefully on Friday, February 22, 2013, at the Radius Heritage Nursing Home in Sandwich.

Muriel was born in Worcester, daughter of Ralph and Amelia (Peterson) Norton. She is survived by her three children, James R. Sweeney of West Hartford, CT, Patricia A. (Sweeney) Stuck and husband “Skip” of Sagamore Beach and Paul F. Sweeney and wife Linda of Hubbardston. Muriel was predeceased by her beloved husband Paul Kenneth Johnston in 2004, and former husband Francis J. Sweeney. Muriel also leaves behind nine grandchildren and six-great grandchildren. She was the oldest of four sisters, Lucille, Phyllis, and Claire all of Worcester, who predeceased her. She also leaves behind family, Carolyn and Donald Slongwhite of Charlton, Mary Buckley, Teresa Sweeney, Robert Sweeney, Silvio Latino, all of Worcester, Edwin and Virginia Sweeney of PA, Patricia (Ruo) Sweeney of FL, a nephew and many nieces.

She was a 1940 graduate of the High School of Commerce, Worcester. She retired from the Town of Shrewsbury in 1986 after 28 years of service, 20 of which was as Assistant Town Treasurer. Muriel was a member of the Shrewsbury Business Women’s Club. She enjoyed sharing good times and traveling with “The Girls”. Muriel celebrated Shrewsbury’s 250th Anniversary while Assistant Treasurer, and also survived the Blizzard of ’78 at the Town Hall.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 9:30 to 11 a.m. followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, February 26, 2013in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery, Shrewsbury. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to New England Center for Children, 33 Turnpike Road, Southborough, MA 01772-2108, serving the needs of children with autism.
