STERLING – Evelyn M. Thomas, 81, of Sholan Terrace, died on Wednesday, March 16, 2011 in UMass Memorial Healthcare-Memorial Campus, Worcester, after an illness.
Evelyn is survived by her sister, Ruth Calcia of Holden; a nephew, Howard Dimmick and his wife Carol of Ft. Collins, CO; two nieces, Marianne Thomas of Sterling and Peggy Charette and her husband Steve of Holden; and several great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three sisters and three brothers. She was born in Sterling, the daughter of Michael and Nellie (Brown) Thomas and had lived in Sterling for many years.
Evelyn graduated from West Boylston High School and worked for 38 years for State Mutual Assurance Co., now known as the Allmerica Co. in Worcester, retiring 1987. She was a member of the First Church in Sterling for over 59 years, and served as its financial secretary and treasurer of benevolence for many years. Evelyn was a state appointed member of the Sterling Housing Authority at Sholan Terrace for 9 years. She enjoyed reading, doing crossword and jigsaw puzzles, solitaire, and playing bingo at Sholan Terrace.
The funeral service for Evelyn will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 19th, in the First Church in Sterling, 6 Meetinghouse Hill Road, Sterling. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery, Sterling. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Town of Sterling, Ambulance Fund, P.O. Box 515, Sterling , MA 01564. Miles-Sterling Funeral Home and Tribute Center, 100 Worcester Road, Sterling is assisting the family with arrangements.
