STERLING – Marie M. Sanmartino, 82, of 116 Clinton Road, died at home on Saturday, August 11, 2007, after a long struggle with cancer.
Marie lived at the family homestead since the age of one, and was the daughter of the late John and Margaret (Calcia) Sanmartino. She was born in Clinton, attended Sterling schools and graduated from Clinton High School in 1943. She leaves four nieces, Nancy Lucci of Clinton, Judith Morey of South Deerfield, Mary Dunn of Lancaster and Denise Sanmartino of New York; a nephew, John Sanmartino of Florida; several great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews. A sister, Helene Lisjak, and three brothers, Stephen, Charles and Louis Sanmartino, predeceased her.
Marie was an avid gardener having learned her techniques from her dad – a top-notch gardener and landscaper. She loved organic vegetable gardening and flowers, braiding rugs and quilting. She worked as an assembler at Ray O’Vac in Clinton for 23 years, retiring in 1976 to help her sister care for her invalid husband who had Multiple Sclerosis. She was an over 50-year member of St. Richard of Chichester Church, member and board member of its Women’s Guild and was active in its Apple Fiesta. She was a founding member of the Father Michael J. Warner’s Scholarship Fund at St. Richards, and was also a member of the Sterling Women’s Club and Historical Society.
Family and friends are invited to calling hours from 5 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, August 12th, in the Miles-Sterling Funeral Home, 100 Worcester Road (Rte. 12), Sterling. The funeral for Marie will be held on Monday, August 13th, from the funeral home with a Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Richard of Chichester Church, 4 Bridge Street, Sterling. Burial will follow in St. John’s Cemetery, Parker Road, Lancaster. Memorial donations may be made to the Father Michael J. Warner’s Scholarship Fund, c/o St. Richard of Chichester Church, P.O.
