Biography
WORCESTER – Morris Shapiro, age 101, of 115 Newton Avenue North, Worcester, died on Thursday January 8, 2015 in the Odd Fellows Home.
His wife of 35 years, Bertha (Parsowsky) Robbins died in 1975. He leaves two daughters, Eileen, wife of Paul Robbins of Worcester with whom he lived for many years, and Sherel Levine of Jerusalem, Israel; three grandchildren, Seth Robbins and his wife, Rachel of Sharon, MA, Brett Robbins of Newport, RI, and Jamie, wife of Sam Rubin of London, England; and six great grandchildren, Sarah, Ethan, Eli, Natanel, Noah, and Eden.
He was born in Bridgeport, CT the son of Louis and Gussie Shapiro, was raised in Brooklyn, NY, and had lived most of his life in Flushing, NY before moving to Worcester 15 years ago.
During WWII he worked as a machinist. He then became a Machine Shop Teacher at Eli Whitney Vocational High School. He also had been a camp director for many years during the summer months.
He was one of the founders of the United Federation of Teachers in NY. Due to his tireless efforts regarding unfair salary policies of vocational teachers, he was elected the first Vice President of Vocational High Schools for the United Federation of Teachers in 1962 until his retirement in 1982.
FUNERAL SERVICES WILL BE HELD AT 9:30 AM ON MONDAY, JANUARY 12TH IN BETH ISRAEL SYNAGOGUE ON JAMESBURY DRIVE UNDER THE DIRECTION OF RICHARD PERLMAN OF MILES FUNERAL HOME. Burial will be in New Montefiore Cemetery in West Babylon, NY.
Memorial Observance will begin on Tuesday, January 13th and will be held on 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM on Tuesday, January 13th, Wednesday, January 14th, and Thursday, January 15th at the residence of Eileen and Paul Robbins, 115 Newton Avenue North, Worcester.
