Biography

WORCESTER - Morris H. “Murray” Abramoff, 98, died Tuesday, June 13, 2017 at home at Eisenberg Assisting Living Residence in Worcester with his beloved wife Ethel at his side.   Murray was born in Worcester, son of Israel and Eva (Glass) Abramoff and lived here most of his life.
He graduated from Classical High School where he was captain of the state championship tennis team of 1936.  As he often said “he was born in WWI and fought in WWII”.   He enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served in the European Theater, 630th Field Artillery Battalion as the youngest First Sergeant in the army.    Following his military service, Murray married the former Ethel Katz and they moved to New York with his brother where they operated a United Cigar Store in Astoria, Queens.  After returning from New York, he worked for Snider Brothers Beef  in Sutton, MA as Sales Manager Extraordinaire for nearly 30 years.  He then worked for The Senior Advocate as an Advertising Sales Manager where he was instrumental in the creation of the Elder Resource Guide, retiring in 2014 at the age of 95.
An avid athlete for all of his life, Murray was an accomplished golfer, an active runner, worked out 7 days a week and was working with a personal trainer until a week ago.  He was also a devoted fan of the Greendale Y.    Murray was a longtime volunteer at the Friendly House in Worcester where he would often provide food to those in need. He made friends wherever he went.  He had a big appetite for life and enjoyed sharing it with others.
He leaves his wife of 71 years, Ethel (Katz) Abramoff, daughters, Barbara A. Levy of Jamaica Plain and Debra Brooks and her husband Howard of Marblehead; sons, Larry Abramoff and his wife Gloria of Worcester and David F. Abramoff and his wife Julie of Fort Collins, Colorado; seven grandchildren: Rebecca Levy and her husband Mico, Sarah Persing and her husband Oren, Joe Abramoff, Michael Abramoff and his wife E.J., David Brooks and his husband Thiago, Stephanie Brooks and Leah Brooks, two great-grandchildren: Liyam and Micah; and his sister, Natalie.  He was pre-deceased by his sister, Sandra and his brother, Harry Abramoff.
