Mildred B. Hirst

April 8, 1919 — February 17, 2017

STERLING – Mildred B. (Batchelder) Hirst, 97, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 17, 2017 at UMass Memorial Health Care in Worcester. Born and raised in Wilton, NH, Mildred was a daughter of the late Daniel and Lena (Badger) Batchelder. She graduated from Wilton High School and Nashua Business College and was a secretary for French & Heald Company and AHCE Bradley Frost Company in Milford, NH.



In 1940 she married the late Howard L. Hirst and moved to Bridgeport, CT for 12 years before moving to Sterling where she resided from October, 1952 until 2011. Her last years were spent at Sunrise Senior Living in Leominster and Notre Dame du Lac in Worcester.



A member of the First Church in Sterling since April, 1953, Mildred held many positions including President of Women’s Alliance for 2 years and Treasurer for Woman’s Alliance for 5 years. She was on numerous committees and boards throughout the years including Clerk of Records for 12 years.  She was a member of the Board of Deacons and Deaconess’ for 25 years before retiring in 2010.  Mildred was active in the community and assisted the Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Sterling PTA.  She was a story reader for 2nd grade children for 2 years.



Mildred will be affectionately missed and remembered by her three sons, Carl W. Hirst and his wife, Judy of Aiken, SC, Brian L. Hirst and his wife, Rosemary of Sutton and Warren L. Hirst and his wife, Cathy of Somerville; her daughter, Beverly I. DeCook of Seattle, WA; a daughter-in-law, Joan Hirst of Sterling; her sister, Eleanor J. Fallon of Milford; ten grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she is predeceased by a son, Paul K. Hirst and a brother, Raymond F. Batchelder.



Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Mildred’s family from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, February 21, at the Miles-Sterling Funeral and Tribute Center, 100 Worcester Road (Rte. 12), Sterling. Her funeral will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, February 22, at the First Church in Sterling.  Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery.
