WEST BOYLSTON – Michael W. Roberts, 64, of Keyes St., died peacefully at his home with his wife and daughter by his side on Tuesday, November 27, 2012 after a courageous battle with breast cancer. Born and raised in Fredericksburg, Texas, Mike was the son of Estile E. and Mary Louise (Wofford) Roberts and lived 41 years in West Boylston.
Mike graduated from Fredericksburg High School in 1967. In 1968, during the Vietnam War era, Mike joined the United States Navy and proudly served his country aboard the USS Charles P. Cecil. Relocating to Worcester in 1971, he married Jean A. Berry and continued his education at Clark University graduating in 1975.
He was a principal technical writer at EMC in Southborough where he worked for over 10 years, retiring due to illness in 2008. He attended the Oakdale United Methodist Church in West Boylston. He enjoyed playing the guitar, traveling, photography and especially cooking. Together with several friends, Mike organized a competitive barbeque cooking team which won numerous awards throughout New England.
Mike’s family is grateful to Dr. Kathryn Edmiston and the oncology team at UMass Medical Center, University Campus, who provided such outstanding care for Mike over the years. The family would also like to acknowledge and thank the Oakdale United Methodist Church family for their compassionate care and support.
Mike is survived by and will be greatly missed by his wife of 41 years, Jean A. (Berry) Roberts; his daughter, Kathryn Lee Roberts of West Boylston; a brother, Richard Roberts of Alabama; two sisters, Betty Jean Gellermann of Fredericksburg, TX and Barbara Jenschke of Luckenbach, TX; and several nephews and nieces. A brother, Ted Roberts, predeceased him.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 2 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, December 1, at the Miles-Sterling Funeral and Tribute Center, 100 Worcester Rd., Sterling. A memorial service celebrating Mike’s life will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, December 2, at Oakdale United Methodist Church, 15 N. Main St., West Boylston, with The Rev. Elizabeth Bachelder Smith officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to UMass Memorial Foundation, Breast Cancer Research Fund, 333 South St., Shrewsbury, MA 01545 or to the Oakdale United Methodist Church, 15 N.
