Michael A. Hayden

February 26, 1946 — January 13, 2012

RUTLAND – Michael A. Hayden, 65, of 106 Main Street, died unexpectedly in his home on Friday, January 13, 2012. He was born in Holden, the son of Francis B. and Lorena E. (Fitzpatrick) Hayden and lived in Rutland all of his life.

He is survived and will be greatly missed by his loving daughter, Shannon M. Johnson and her husband Robert of Holden; his son, Andrew M. Hayden of Gardner; a brother, Francis B. Hayden of North Brookfield; two grandchildren, Allison K. and Kaitlyn A. Johnson both of Holden; two sisters-in-law, Sally M. Hayden and Dale E. Hayden both of Rutland; and his close friend, David Benoit of Rutland. He is predeceased by his brother, Patrick E. Hayden who died in 2007.

After graduating from Wachusett Regional High School in 1964, Mike enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and honorably served his country from 1964 to 1967. In 1966, he served in Vietnam where he attained the rank of Sergeant and received the Vietnam Service Metal, Vietnam Campaign Metal and the Marines Good Conduct Metal. Returning home in 1967, Mike went to work at Norton Company in Worcester where he was employed for over 20 years. He later worked for ECC Corp in Jefferson and Quabaug Rubber Company in North Brookfield.
Mike was a proud veteran and was a member of the American Legion, Sawyer Mathieu – Kearns Post 41 in North Brookfield and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 905 in Gardner where he served as a former adjunct officer for District 11. He was also a member of St. Patrick’s Church and a former 49- year member of the Rutland Sportsman’s Club.

He was committed to his home town of Rutland where he coached youth sports including farm and little league baseball, Pop Warner Football, and served as a Firefighter/EMT for over 20 years. Mike had a passion for local and national politics and you could find him pondering issues with his dear friends at local eateries and watering holes. He also loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman.

Mike’s biggest joy in life was spending time with his loving family, especially his two grandchildren. We will all miss his zest for life and happy-go-lucky spirit.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, January 17, at the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. A funeral Mass honoring Mike’s Life will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, January 18, in St. Patrick’s Church, 258 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Rutland. Military honors will follow at Rural Cemetery, Rutland. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The Rutland 4th of July Gift Account, 250 Main Street, Rutland, MA 01543; or the Rutland Little League, P.O. Box 608, Rutland, MA 01543.
