Norman M. French

WEST BOYLSTON – Norman M. French, Jr., 81, of 15 Cavour Circle, died peacefully on Wednesday, January 7, 2009 in Millbury Healthcare Center, Millbury after an illness.

He leaves his wife of 20 years, Gail L. (Flagg) French; a son, Timothy A. French and his wife Elizabeth of Shrewsbury; two daughters, Deborah A. Martin and her husband Roger of Hubbardston and Marcia J. French of Maine; a step-son, Gary A. Daigle of California; two step-daughters, Lana L. Lloyd of Leicester and Nancy G. Wood of East Brookfield; a brother, Donald T. French of Holden; a sister, Marian Cogswell of Spencer; 6 grandchildren; a great grandson; nephews and nieces. His first wife, Anne D. (Swicker) French died in 1982. A step-son, Darin B. Daigle predeceased him. He was born in Worcester the son of Norman M. and Marjorie E. (Taylor) French and lived 46 years in West Boylston.

Mr. French graduated from Classical High School, attended Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and graduated from the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis. He was a Lieutenant J-G for the U.S. Navy during both the Korean and Vietnam Wars aboard several ships including the USS Yellowstone and the USS Severn.

He began his career as an industrial engineer for Norton Co. in Worcester and assisted in the development the flak-vest used during the Vietnam War. He later worked at Penn-Dixon in Westboro and over 20 years at Applied Plastics in Norwood. He was a member of the First Congregational Church of West Boylston and sang in its choir for many years. He was a member of the Navy Mutual Aid Association, Irving W. Adams American Legion Post 36 in Roslindale and the U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a calling hour at 12 noon followed by a funeral service at 1 p.m. on Saturday, January 10th in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Massachusetts Chapter, 311 Arsenal Street, Watertown, MA 02472, or the Jehovah Witness Kingdom Hall, 659 Franklin Street, Worcester, MA 01604.
