HOLDEN – Mary Patricia (Plummer) Burke, 88, of Chadwick St., Worcester and formerly of Holden, died peacefully on Thursday, July 12, 2012 under the loving care of her family and the staff at Holden Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and Notre Dame Hospice in Worcester. Her loving husband of 58 years, Edmund I. Burke, died in 2004.
Born in Medford, Mary was the daughter of Francis and Catherine (Lyng) Plummer and lived in 45 years in Holden and 20 years on Cape Cod. Mary was a graduate of Medford High School in 1942, Melrose Hospital School of Nursing in 1945 and continued her education at Anna Maria College in Paxton. She was a registered nurse and worked at Holden Hospital and spent 12 years as a clinical instructor at Hahnemann School of Nursing. She later was Director of Nursing at Lewis Bay Convalescence Center where she started the first Head Trauma unit on Cape Cod.
She was an avid reader, enjoyed arts and crafts and will be most remembered for the joy her children and grandchildren gave her.
She is survived by five children, Stephen J. Burke and his wife Darlene of Jefferson, Edmund F. Burke and his wife Kathy of Worcester, Paul A. Burke and his wife Tammy of Palmer, Laura Pearson of East Douglas and Suellen Gauthier and her husband Jack of Southington, CT; two sisters, Rene Morehouse of St. Augustine, FL and Ann Fitzgerald of Myrtle Beach, NC; eight grandchildren, John, Ryan, Paul, Allison, Christopher, Denis, Elise and Mark; and 5 great-grandchildren, Jenna, McKenzie, Mason, Liam and Melissa. A son, Daniel Burke died in 2011.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Monday, July 16, at St. Mary’s Church, 114 Princeton Street, Jefferson. Burial will follow at Worcester County Memorial Park, 217 Richards Avenue (Rte. 56), Paxton. Memorial contributions may be made to Notre Dame Hospice, 557 Plantation Street, Worcester, MA 01605.
