Mary Ellen (Parquet) Herx

STERLING/WEST BOYLSTON – Dr. Mary Ellen (Parquet) Herx, 85, passed away in her home on Tuesday, August 7, 2012, surrounded by her loved ones after bravely battling MS for more than 35 years. She was born in Omaha, Nebraska, the daughter of Stephen and Mary Ellen (Cameron) Parquet and lived in West Boylston for 35 years before moving to Sterling 17 years ago.

She leaves her husband of 50 years, Dr. Frederick C. Herx II; two daughters, Mary Ellen Herx-Morrill and her husband William and Anne M. Weaver and her husband Jim, and a daughter-in-law, Katrina Cardoza Herx; a sister, Anne Mitchell of Omaha, NE; nine grandchildren, Elizabeth and her husband Matt, Michelle, James, Stephanie, Freddy IV, Emma, Jacob, Shawn and Anna; a great granddaughter, Madison; and many loved nieces and nephews. Her son, Frederick C. Herx III and her sister, Jean Wilson, predeceased her.

Dr. Herx received her Bachelor’s degree in English from Creighton University in Omaha, NE and earned her Masters and Ph.D from the University of Nebraska. She was a professor of English Literature at Worcester State College retiring in 1988; she was thereafter awarded the title of Professor Emeritus. She also taught at the College of the Holy Cross and Creighton University. She was a member of St. Richard of Chichester Church in Sterling and the Retired Massachusetts Teacher Association. She enjoyed traveling, theater and playing bridge, but above all she loved spending time with her family and friends.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, August 10, in the Miles-Sterling Funeral and Tribute Center, 100 Worcester Road (Rte. 12), Sterling. The funeral for Dr. Herx will be held on Saturday, August 11, from the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. in St. Richard of Chichester Church, 4 Bridge Street, Sterling, followed by a committal service at Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Church Street, West Boylston. Flowers may be sent or memorial contributions may be made to the National MS Society, Greater New England Chapter, P.O. Box 845945, Boston, MA 02284-5945.
