Mary Hirbour Flandreau

HOLDEN ~ Mary Hirbour "Hibbie" Flandreau, 83, of Jefferson, MA, died March 14, 2011, in St. Vincent Hospital, leaving behind her family and many dear friends. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Mary was born in North Brookfield on June 18, 1928, the daughter of the late Oscar Hirbour and Mabel R. Roberts. She attended school in North Brookfield and received her RN diploma from City Hospital, Worcester. She worked at Holden Hospital for many years and was the infection control nurse when she retired. At the time of her death, Mary was employed as a receptionist by Southgate at Shrewsbury.

She was predeceased by her two children, Stephen Cummings, who died in Vietnam, and Lee Cummings, who died in 2006. Mary leaves 3 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren: Noah Cummings of Holden and his daughter Justice, Joshua Cummings of Florida, and Katrina Stol of North Carolina and her children, Shamsi Cummings and Jesra Stol.

Mary was a person with many interests. She enjoyed traveling, sewing and other handwork crafts, reading, movies, bird watching, and spending time with her many friends, but her greatest love was gardening. She also enjoyed walking in the woods near her home, sometimes accompanied by Max, her favorite dog friend.

A memorial service will be held in early summer. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her name may be made to the Gale Free Library, 23 Highland Street, Holden, MA 01520, or to the Massachusetts SPCA, 350 South Huntington Avenue, Jamaica Plain, MA 02130. Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, is assisting the family with arrangements.
