Mary Bernice (O'Connor) Harrington

WORCESTER – Mary Bernice (O’Connor) Harrington, 92, died Tuesday, September 20, 2005, in UMass Memorial Hospital, Worcester.

Her husband of 30 years, Robert F. Harrington, died in 1972. She leaves four daughters, Mary Ellen Harrington with whom she lived, Sister Eleanor T. Harrington of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Springfield, Patricia M., wife of Timothy J. O’Malley of Rutland and Kathleen H., wife of Richard W. Burgess of Spencer. She also leaves six grandchildren, Sean, Brian and Michael O’Malley, and Kate, Julie and Daniel Burgess and several nieces and a nephew. A son, Lance Corporal John D. Harrington, of the U.S. Marine Corps was killed in action in Vietnam on Nov. 11, 1969. A brother, Thomas P. O’Connor of Worcester, a sister, Kathryn V. Carrigan of Burlington, and a granddaughter, Heather Lynn Burgess of Spencer, predeceased her. She was born in Worcester, daughter of Thomas and Katherine (Powers) O’Connor, and lived in Worcester her entire life. She was a graduate of Commerce High School in 1931.

Mrs. Harrington worked as a bookkeeper at Western Auto Supply Store in Worcester for several years. She later joined her husband in their family business, Harrington House of Carpets in Worcester. She was a member of St. George’s Church and the Women’s Guild at St. Peter’s Church and St. George’s Church, the Legion of Mary and the AARP of Worcester. She volunteered at St. Vincent’s hospital and Rutland Height’s Hospital and for several years was a finance committee member at St. George’s Church. She was a Gold Star Mother.

The funeral Mass in celebration of Mrs. Harrington’s life will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 23, in St. George’s Church, 38 Brattle Street, Worcester. Burial will follow in St. John’s Cemetery, 260 Cambridge Street, Worcester. A visitation period will be held from 9 to 10:30 a.m. prior to the Mass, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of St. Joseph, Mont Marie, 34 Lower Westfield Road, Suite 1, Holyoke, MA 01040.
