HOLDEN – Martin J. Freitas, 69, of 10 Chestnut Hill Road, died from a sudden heart attack at home on Wednesday, May 18, 2005.
He leaves his wife of 47 years, Mary Lee (Confer) Freitas; a son, Thomas M. Freitas and his wife Lynn, of Charlotte, North Carolina; two daughters, Anne L. Friedland and her husband Richard of Suffern, New York, and Miriam F. Mellin and her husband Paul of Annapolis, Maryland; two brothers, Joseph Freitas of Elmira, New York, and Juvenal Freitas of Corning, New York; a sister, Hilda Allington of Corning, New York; six grandchildren, Margo Friedland, Sarah, Jack and Claire Mellin, Nicole and Tyler Freitas; and his mother-in-law, Marion Confer of Corning. A sister, Mary Robinson, predeceased him. He was born in Corning, son of Joseph and Mary (Vieira) Freitas, and lived in Endwell, New York before moving to Holden 36 years ago. He was a graduate of the Bryant and Stratton Business School in Buffalo, New York. He served in the U.S. Army from 1955-1957.
Mr. Freitas worked in sales for Armour-Dial Company. Subsequently he worked for Rayco in Shrewsbury, retiring in 1998. He was an avid golfer and a founding member of Sterling Country Club.
A Memorial Mass for Martin Freitas will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, May 23, in St. Mary’s Church, 114 Princeton Street, Jefferson. Calling hours are from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, May 22, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. Burial will be at a later date in Corning. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Gale Free Library, 23 Highland Street, Holden, MA 01520.
