WEST BOYLSTON – Marjorie E. (Downer) Sherwood, 82, of West Boylston, died peacefully under the loving care of her daughter, family and the staff at the Blair House in Worcester on Friday, September 19, 2014. Born in Worcester, Marjorie was the daughter of Carl O. and Ellen L. (Hyslop) Downer and lived most of her life in West Boylston.
Marjorie attended West Boylston schools and worked over 20 years at Sprague Electric in Worcester. She was a member of Oakdale United Methodist Church in West Boylston and sang in its choir for 50 years. She was an amazingly gifted musician, singer and composer. She was a self taught musician and played numerous instruments including her favorites, the piano and accordion. Marjorie was happiest when immersed in her music and bringing joy to others. Her life at times was bitter sweet but she always persevered and found the strength to make others smile with her contagious sense of humor. She will be remembered for her incredible personality and devotion to her family.
Marjorie is survived and will be lovingly missed by her son, Steven D. Sherwood and his wife, Cynthia of Rutland; two daughters, Wendy E. Sherwood of Webster and Luanne Reid and her husband, Ronald of Lakewood, California; three brothers, Alden Downer and his wife, Betsy of West Boylston, Douglas Downer of California and Orton Downer and his wife, Patsy of Florida; a sister, Velma Grassler of Florida; eight grandchildren, Scott, Sarah, Sandra, Stacey, Crystal, Steven, Matthew and Lynette; 10 great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. She is predeceased by two brothers, Wayne and Wesley Downer, and a sister, Marion Smith.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Marjorie’s family from 2 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, September 27, at the Miles-Sterling Funeral and Tribute Center, 100 Worcester Road (Rte. 12), Sterling, followed by a funeral service honoring her life at 3 p.m. Interment will be held privately at a later date in Worcester County Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Oakdale United Methodist Church, 15 North Main Street, West Boylston, MA 01583.
