Marilyn Joanne Cormier, 86, of Leominster, died Saturday, June 11, 2016 at Sterling
Village Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Marilyn was born on December 1, 1929 in Springfield, Massachusetts, a daughter of the late George Gilbert Sr. and Premilia Cormier. She was also predeceased by her brother, George Gilbert Cannier, Jr. She attended elementary schools in North Grosvenor Dale, Connecticut, East Longmeadow, Massachusetts, and Spruce Street School in Leominster. She graduated from Leominster High School in 1947, thereafter earning a diploma from Central Secretarial School. She then attended Worcester Junior College before taking a part time job with Service Electric Supply Co. in 1951, at which time she entered a teaching program at Fitchburg State Teacher's College. Working toward her teaching degrees, she attended The Elms College, Boston University and Fitchburg State Teachers College, where she received her BS in Education in 1955 and her MS in Education in 1966. During her 37 year teaching career, she taught remedial reading for one year in East Longmeadow and taught elementary grades for many years at Lunenburg Elementary School. She loved to teach children.
Marilyn's interests included traveling in and out of the country, photography and spending time with her siblings and nieces and nephews who gave her much joy. In her early years, Marilyn possessed a fine soprano voice and was in much demand in WW II to sing at patriotic events, public concerts, and church services. She loved to lead group singing at Christmas parties sponsored by the local social and fraternal clubs for children. She will be remembered for her caring and warm manner for everyone. Marilyn was a communicant of the now closed St. Bernard's Church in Fitchburg and later Our Lady of the Lake Church, Leominster.
She leaves her brother Alwyn Cormier and wife, Sara Jane of Salem, New York; a sister, Corinne Des Pres of Cornville, Maine; and sister-In-law, Elizabeth Cormier of Stow; a brother-in-law, Richard Place of Mandeville, Louisiana. She also leaves many nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, June 15, at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of the Lake Church, 1400 Main Street. Leominster. Burial will follow in Saint Bernard’s Cemetery, Fitchburg. There are no visiting hours. Memorial contributions may be sent to Our Lady of the Lake Church.
