Mari Rebecca Porter Seder, age 83, died peacefully on Saturday, November 2nd, 2024, at the Jewish Healthcare Center in Worcester, surrounded by her loving children and sister.

Born in Worcester, Mari was the daughter of Bernard and Ruth (Perlmutter) Porter and a lifelong Worcester resident. After graduating from Classical High School, she attended Wheelock College, earning a Bachelor of Science in Education. She eventually earned a master’s degree in Liberal Arts from Clark University.

Mari had two passions: art and teaching.
Her early career in teaching began in the New York City Public elementary schools in Harlem and Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn.
She resumed her career in Early Childhood Education as the head preschool teacher at the Jewish Community Center in Worcester in the early 1980s, and then as a professor of Early Childhood Education at Quinsigamond Community College.

Mari was an artist throughout her life. She was very involved in the Worcester art scene and in Oaxaca, Mexico. She won many grants and prizes for her art. She showed her paintings, photography, and collages throughout the Northeast, including New York City and Boston, and in Mexico and Cuba.

She merged her love for education and art by using play and art in her teaching adhering to the pedagogy of the Reggio Emilia school. After retiring, she spent six months of the year in Mexico where she gave art workshops to visitors of Oaxaca.

Mari was married to J. Robert Seder with whom she had three children. She will be lovingly missed and remembered by her son Samuel L. Seder of Brooklyn, NY, her daughters Julie A. Seder of New York City, and Betsy L. Seder of New York City and Los Angeles; her beloved grandchildren Myla and Saul; her beloved brother and sister-in-law Alex and Trudi Porter; her dear sister Sara J. Porter and predeceased brother-in-law Jim McGuiness; her nephews Bernie and Josh; her longtime companion, Wally Andrews, and many, many dear friends and students.

Family and friends will gather to honor Mari’s life at a Funeral Service at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, November 6th at Temple Emanuel Sinai, 661 Salisbury Street, Worcester.
