PAXTON – Marguerite F. (Girouard) Hughes, 101, passed away on Friday, March 12, 2021, at UMass Memorial Healthcare – Memorial Campus after an illness. She was born in Worcester, the daughter of Joseph S. and Florence A. (Collier) Girouard, and had lived most of her life in Paxton before moving to Highland House.
Her loving husband of 40 years, Robert A. Hughes, passed away in 1980. She leaves her sons, Stephen S. Hughes and his wife, Marcia of East Boothbay, ME and John R. Hughes and his wife, Janet of Paxton; her grandchildren, Thomas Hughes and Maggie Hughes; her great-grandson, Jameson; and several nieces, nephews, grand-nephews and grand-nieces. She was predeceased by her sister, Madeline McGovern.
Marguerite graduated from Commerce High School and was a clerk at O’Coin’s in Worcester. She was a founding member of St. Columba Church, the Women’s Guild and was a member of the Paxton Women’s Club. She was an avid reader, was a member of the book club and enjoyed spending time at her home on Sandwich Downs, Cape Cod where she had many friends.
Marguerite’s family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the staff and residents at Highland House for their years of care, compassion and friendship.
Funeral services for Marguerite will be held on Saturday, March 20th with a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in St. Columba Church, 18 Richards Ave., Paxton, MA 01612. Burial will follow at Mooreland Cemetery in Paxton. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, appropriate social distancing and wearing of a mask will be required. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Columba Church. Arrangements are under the care of the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden.
