HOLDEN/WORCESTER – Margaret "Peg" Johnson of 72 Briarwood Circle, Worcester, died on Wednesday, January 28, 2009 in Knollwood Nursing Center. She was predeceased by a son, Stephen Johnson. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Dr. Robert M. Johnson and three sons, Philip H. Johnson of Pawley's Island, SC, Christopher C. Johnson of Center Harbor, NH and Bruce G. Johnson of Webster, NH; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She is also survived by three brothers, Charles E. Chesley of Peabody, Kimball Chesley of San Diego, CA and Winslow Chesley of Port St. Lucie, FL plus several nieces and nephews. She was born in Haverhill in 1921, daughter of Edward G. and Margaret Kimball Chesley.
Mrs. Johnson graduated from Westbrook College and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. She was a charter member of the Women in Military Service. She was a 50-year plus member of the First Baptist Church of Holden where she served in many capacities including superintendent of the church school, president of the Women's Fellowship and church clerk. She was a member of the former Hahnemann Hospital Auxiliary, the Worcester Art Museum, the Worcester Music Festival, the Worcester Center for Crafts, the New Hampshire Music Festival and the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen. She was a skilled crafts person in enameling and jewelry. She was especially adept at pressed flower arrangements, and with her husband, formed Grasshoppers to create a combination of pressed flowers and stained glass projects. She was a member of Chapter R. Worcester P.E.O. Sisterhood, the Massachusetts Executive Board of P.E.O. and served as an educational loan fund trustee for P.E.O. International.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, February 2nd, in the First Baptist Church of Holden. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the P.E.O. Educational Loan Fund or the P.E.O. Scholars Award Fund, c/o Beth Clay, 11 Terrie Lane, Holden, MA 01520; or to the First Baptist Church of Holden, 1216 Main Street, Holden, MA 01520. Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden, is directing arrangements.
