CLINTON – Margaret (Mateer) Matthews, 97, passed away on Saturday, March 3, 2012 surrounded by her loving family.
Her husband, Kempton R. Matthews, passed away in 1980. She leaves her daughter, Kathleen L. Pierce of Lancaster; a daughter-in-law, Donna-Jeanne Matthews of Clinton; four grandchildren, Tina Pierce (Mike) of North Brookfield, Keith Pierce (Cindy) of Shirley, Joy Matthews (Chris) of Clinton and James Castagna of Florida; three great-grandchildren, Christian Smith of Clinton, Jacob Stone and Jessie Mae Pierce, both of Shirley; several nephews and nieces. A son, James K. Matthews, a brother, James Mateer, and two grandchildren, Wally Matthews and Peter Castagna, predeceased her.
Margaret was born in Belfast, Ireland, the daughter of James and Elizabeth (Hughes) Mateer and had lived in Whitinsville, Lancaster and over 40 years in Clinton. She was a matron at the Lancaster School for Girls for many years. Previously, she worked in the cafeteria of the Lancaster Elementary School and was a crossing guard for the Clinton Police Dept. She was a member of the Clinton Presbyterian Church and past matron of the Trinity Chapter Order of the Eastern Star in Clinton. She was an avid walker who enjoyed her strolls through town and visiting with friends. Margaret was a friendly and hard working lady who was devoted to her church. Her radiant blue eyes were the window to her kind soul. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends.
A memorial service for Margaret will be held on Saturday, March 10, at 10 a.m. in the Clinton Presbyterian Church, 175 Chestnut Street, Clinton. A committal service will follow at the Eastwood Cemetery in Lancaster. Please omit flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Clinton Presbyterian Church, 169 Chestnut Street, Clinton, MA 01510. Funeral arrangements are under the care of Miles-Sterling Funeral and Tribute Center, 100 Worcester Road, Sterling.
