HOLDEN – Margaret Eunice (Garner) Allen, 86, of Holden, entered into the next phase of her life on April 5, 2005 after a long illness.
Mrs. Allen was born in Claremont, South Dakota on January 24, 1919. Her father, Ora L. Garner, was a pioneer in the Dakota Territory before it became South Dakota, and was superintendent of schools in Claremont, SD. He passed away in 1951. Her mother, Aimee Marie Rice was originally from Tyson, Vermont, passed away in 1954. She was also the stepdaughter of the late John E. Windle, Jr. She married James Henry Allen on June 7, 1941, was married for 52 years before his death in 1993.
Mrs. Allen leaves her two sons, Kenneth Lewis Allen and Robert Whitney Allen, both of Holden; her sister, Nora Janice Garner Riggs Belfay of Grafton; a cousin, Janet Eidbo of Des Moines, Iowa; many relatives and friends throughout the U.S., and her lifetime pen pal, Vi Lockhart of Tamworth, England.
She worked for State Mutual Life Insurance and Sawyer Lumber Company, both in Worcester. She attended Minneapolis Business College, the Chicago Art Institute, Beckers Business College and the Worcester Art Museum where she studied under Richard Hunter. Margaret also studied independently under Emily Manchester. A member of the Shrewsbury Art Association, her greatest passion was painting portraits and scenic nature in oil, acrylic and watercolor. She held the Vice President and President positions of the Deacon Edmund Rice Association for a couple of years. Her religious family was the First Baptist Church of Holden, performing as “Special Interest Missionary”. Margaret was a member of the Friends of the Holden Council on Aging and was a pen pal to second graders for many years. She loved Cape Cod during the summer months.
Family and friends are invited to attend a graveside service on Friday, April 8,at 9:00 a.m. at Pine Grove Cemetery, Waterville Street (Rt. 30), North Grafton, followed by a Memorial Service at the First Baptist Church, 1216 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden at 11:00 a.m. Calling hours will be held on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Margaret’s memory to the First Baptist Church Memorial Fund, 1216 Main Street, Holden, MA 01520.
