WORCESTER - Margaret Mary "Peggy" Cichon (Kelley) passed away on February 14, 2023, at Knollwood Nursing Center in Worcester, MA. She was predeceased by her husband, Edward J. Cichon, Sr., to whom she was married for 54 years.
Peggy was born July 29, 1931, in Willimantic, CT where she lived until moving to Storrs, CT in 1955 with Ed to raise their family. She resided there until 2007 when she moved to the Briarwood Retirement Community in Worcester to be closer to her children following Ed's passing.
Peggy graduated from high school at 16 years old and immediately went to work in the office of one of the local mills in Willimantic. When her children entered school, she took a position as the secretary of the Southeast Elementary School in Mansfield, moving eventually to provide administrative support for the opening and running the Mansfield Middle School. During that time, she also took college classes, earning her Associate's degree in accounting. With her degree in hand, she took a position in the accounting office at the University of Connecticut. She was in charge of inventory for the University at the time of her retirement in 1992.
Upon retirement, Peggy's focus was her family. She was known to show up with dinner in hand, or a batch of freshly baked cookies at her daughter's or son's house. She was always there to take care of her grandchildren when needed as she loved spending time with her granddaughters. As they grew older she tried to catch as many of their sporting events as possible. While she was always very proud of their accomplishments, she was always there to lend support in tough times when they just needed her unconditional love or a sympathetic ear. Her children and her granddaughters were the light of her life.
After moving to Worcester, Peggy was very active in the Briarwood Retirement Community. She served as the treasurer of the Briarwood Resident Association for several years, volunteered at the annual golf tournament fundraiser, was in the annual holiday show for many years, and enjoyed taking part in as many activities as possible, especially enjoying the field trips and theater excursions.
Peggy leaves behind her son, Edward Cichon, Jr. and his wife Debra Trantolo; her daughter, Ann Cichon and her husband Paul Anderson; and her grandchildren Morgan Jablonka and her husband Jeffrey, Daron Cichon, Katherine Anderson, and Megan Anderson and her husband Nathan Goodman. She also leaves behind many relatives on both the Kelley and Cichon sides of the family, friends from her time in Connecticut, as well as newer friends made in the Briarwood community.
The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the entire staff of Briarwood and especially Knollwood for the great care she received while a community member. She was always so appreciative of everyone's friendship and support.
Following her wishes, there will be no memorial services. She will be placed to rest alongside her husband in Arlington National Cemetery. Memorial donations can be made to the Knollwood Nursing Center, 87 Briarwood Circle, Worcester, MA 01606. Please note that your donation is in memory of Margaret Cichon.
Funeral arrangements are under the care of the Miles Funeral Home of Holden.
