Margaret 'Maggie' A. (Mahoney) Burke

April 13, 1951 — May 29, 2015

HOLDEN - Margaret A. (Mahoney) Burke, 64, of Holden, passed away at home on Friday, May 29, 2015. Born and raised in Worcester, Maggie was the daughter of Joseph F. and Arline M. (Molaghan) Mahoney and lived 40 years in Holden.

She leaves her husband of 39 years, William H. Burke; a son, Ryan Burke of Santa Barbara, CA and a daughter, Brianna Burke and her husband, Benjamin Attella of Huntington Beach, CA; a grandson, Cameron Attella; two sisters, Mary T. Wood and her husband, Paul of Harvard and Ellen M. Nagle of Randolph; nephews and nieces. Besides her parents, Maggie is predeceased by her sister, Kathleen S. Lockhart.

Maggie was a 1969 graduate of Doherty Memorial High School in Worcester and received her Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education form Worcester State College. Maggie was a member of both the Massachusetts Teachers Association and the New England Association of Teachers. She taught at May Street, Granite Street and Chandler Street Elementary Schools in Worcester. In the late 1980’s, Maggie left the Worcester public schools and began teaching preschool in the greater Holden area. She spent the last 15 years of her career teaching at Immanuel Lutheran Nursery School, until June of 2013 when she retired.

While at college, she minored in art and was a loyal member of the Lancer Club. Since 1984, Maggie and her husband, Bill summered at their seasonal home on Webster Lake. Maggie was full of life and enjoyed entertaining her family and friends. You could find her on any given evening peddle boating around the lake’s islands. It was there where she received her greatest joy, peace and serenity. Maggie had a gentle and kind way about her and will be remembered for her witty sense of humor and open mindedness. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and sister and will be missed by the many friends she has made throughout her life.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Maggie's family from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 2, at the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden. A funeral service honoring her life will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, June 3, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 346 Shrewsbury St., Holden. Interment will follow at St. John's Cemetery in Worcester.
