STERLING – Madge L. (Woodcock) Courtney, 85, died peacefully at Sterling Village Nursing Home on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 after suffering with rheumatoid arthritis for over 40 years. Mrs. Courtney was born in Sterling on November 1, 1925, the daughter of Leon A. and Luella (Arnold) Woodcock. She lived in central Massachusetts until retiring in 1973 to Orlando and Haines City, Florida, where she lived for over 30 years before returning to Sterling.
Her loving husband, Stanley G. Courtney, died in 1994. Mrs. Courtney is survived by her children, Bradford Wass of Auburn, Gregory Wass of Sutton, Jerriann Mason of Clinton, W. Frederick Burns of Sterling, Deborah McCulloch of Florida, Carol Grubb of Templeton and Jacqueline Denning of Florida; three brothers, Leon “Woody” Woodcock Jr. of Sterling, Donald Woodcock of Auburn, and James Woodcock of North Carolina; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Courtney graduated from Leominster High School in 1943 and went on to work in the field of cosmetology. With a great work ethic and a passion for her work, Mrs. Courtney opened the “Village Beauty Salon” in South Lancaster, and owned and operated the business before moving to Florida. She was a member of the First Church in Sterling and the Lady’s American Legion Post 189 in Sterling.
The family of Mrs. Courtney would like to sincerely thank the staff members of both the Sterling Village Nursing Home and the Oakdale Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for the care Mrs. Courtney received during these last three years.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 1 to 3 p.m. followed by a funeral service at 3 p.m., on Saturday, October 22, 2011 in the Miles-Sterling Funeral Home and Tribute Center, 100 Worcester Road (Rt. 12), Sterling. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to UMass Memorial Home Health & Hospice, 650 Lincoln Street, Worcester, MA 01605.
