RUTLAND – Veikko Armas Jarvi, 90, passed away on Saturday, February 5, 2011 at Oakdale Rehab and Skilled Nursing Center, West Boylston, after an illness.
His wife of 56 years, Viola M. (Luukko) Jarvi died in 2004. He leaves two sons, William E. Jarvi and his wife Jana of Rutland and Donald A. Jarvi and his wife Sheryl of Hollywood, FL; four daughters, Elaine M. Jefferson of Pepperell, Martha L. Doherty and her husband Frank of Kensington, NH, Catherine A. Reichlen and her husband Bruce of Meredith, NH and Susan I. Jarvi and her husband Carter of Ninole, HI; 12 grandchildren, Nathan, Kevin, Kim, Megan, Scott, Jason, Amy, Daniel, Michael, Stephen, Abigail and Elizabeth; 3 great-grandchildren, Duncan, Jordan and Drew.
He was born in Negaunee, Michigan the son of Emil and Mary (Saara) Jarvi and lived most of his life in Rutland. He was a graduate of the Milwaukee School of Engineering. Armas was a staff sergeant with the Army Air Force during World War II. He served with 1521st AAF Base, Pacific Division, Air Transport Command.
Mr. Jarvi was a technical representative for Simplex Time Recorder in Auburn and Worcester. He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Rutland, the Rutland American Legion Post 310 and he was a member of the Rufus Putnam Lodge of Masons in Rutland. He was a 32nd degree Mason and belonged to the Scottish Rite Bodies of Worcester. He was a former captain of the Rutland Fire Department and served on the Rutland Civil Defense. Armas also was a long time member of the Finnish Heritage Society, Sovittaja in Rutland.
The funeral for Mr. Jarvi will be held on Sunday, February 20th, at 2 p.m. in the First Congregational Church of Rutland, 264 Main Street. Burial will follow in the spring at Rural Cemetery. In lieu of Flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Finnish Heritage Society Sovittaja, PO Box 373, Rutland, MA 01543. Arrangements are under the care of Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden.
