BELCHERTOWN - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Lucinda (Cindy) Crohn on May 26, 2023, at the age of 87.
Born June 17, 1935, in Pontotoc, Mississippi, Cindy grew up there and in a succession of small towns in Mississippi and Missouri. She studied piano and graduated from Mississippi Southern College in 1957, with a Bachelor's degree in music, which was her passion. She converted to Judaism and married pianist Harris Crohn in 1958 and set about building with him a life devoted to music and teaching.
From Mississippi, Cindy and Harris moved with their growing family to Rochester, NY, Corpus Christi, TX, and eventually suburban Dallas. Cindy taught music classes at Akiba Academy and later, following in the footsteps of other entrepreneurial women in her family, established herself as an independent piano teacher working from her home studio in Richardson. She became a leader in the Richardson Music Teachers Association and continued to work with children from kindergarten through high school until Harris' retirement, when they relocated to Belchertown, MA. They both loved the Amherst area for its rural beauty and magnificent seasons.
Once Cindy was able to devote time to her lifelong interest in writing, she began attending workshops and writing short stories, and in 2009 completed the first edition of a book about her life, Out From Under the Kudzu: A Southern Woman's Memoir. She hoped her recollections would convey to her family--especially her grandchildren--something of the extraordinary transformation the country, and she herself, underwent in the course of the tumultuous mid-20th century.
Cindy was predeceased by Harris in 2004 and sorely missed him for the rest of her life. She remained for a number of years in Belchertown, eventually moving to the Eisenberg Assisted Living Center in Worcester, and finally, the Jewish Healthcare Center.
Cindy is survived by her brother Tommy Wardlaw; daughters Jennifer Crohn (Robert Donald), Deborah Crohn, and Rachael Missall (David Missall); and by her grandchildren Jonathan, Naomi, Leah, and Jacob, each of whom she was exceedingly proud of, both for their artistic talents and for who they had become as human beings.
Cindy will be remembered for her love of music, literature and beauty, her sense of humor, and for her devotion to her family, lifelong friends, and students. Her funeral and graveside service will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, May 30th, at Wildwood Cemetery in Amherst. Please visit this obituary for a link to the live streamed service. A memorial will be announced at a later date.
The Crohn and Missall families wish to express their gratitude to the compassionate staff, volunteers, and professionals at the JHC of Worcester, who cared for Cindy, befriended her, and treated her with dignity. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Jewish Healthcare Center, 629 Salisbury Street, Worcester, MA 01609 (
