Loretta G. Johnson

HOLDEN – Loretta G. (Gaffney) Johnson, 86, of Hemlock Drive, died on Thursday, July 27, 2006 in Sterling Healthcare Center, Sterling.

She leaves her husband of 64 years, Arthur H. Johnson; two sons, David L. Johnson of Stratford, CT and Stephen L. Johnson of Charlton; a daughter, Barbara A. Desmarais of Holden; and seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was born in Chelsea the daughter of James F. and Marion (Linn) Gaffney and lived 51 years in Holden. She graduated from Winchester High School in 1938, where she was an outstanding athlete, playing field hockey, basketball and swimming. She was selected to tryout for the U.S. Olympic swim team. She was an avid sports fan, loved birds, gardening and animals. She was a member of the M.S.P.C.A.

During WWII, Loretta worked at the assembly line for Submarine Signal Co. in Boston. She volunteered at the Holden Hospital and Rutland State Hospital. She most enjoyed donating her time and efforts to many different organizations, including Holden Days, for which she was one of its founding members. She was one of 3 founding members of the Holden Landmark. She was a member of St. Mary’s Church.

The funeral mass for Loretta will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 1, in St. Mary’s Church, 114 Princeton Street, Jefferson. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, 1325 Main Street, (Rte. 122A) Holden. Calling hours will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Monday, July 31, in Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, (Rte. 122A)Holden. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Mary’s Church, P.O. Box 2200, Jefferson, MA 01522-0190.
