BARRE – Lois Ann (Kezer) Holmes, 78, of Barre, died Wednesday, October 21, 2009, from complications caused by Alzheimer's disease, after 6 years of loving care at Quabbin Valley Healthcare in Athol.
Lois is survived by her husband of 56 years, Herbert Holmes; her children, Helen of Townshend, VT, Edward and his wife Catherine Delaney of Acton, William and his wife Catherine of Barre, and David and his wife Teresa of Whitinsville; as well as seven grandchildren, Chelsea, Tracy, Lindsey, Chad, Benjamin, Rebecca and Amy. She was born in 1930 in Stoneham, the daughter of Edward Irving and Blanche Alma (Carter) Kezer. She lived in Newburyport as a child and later moved to Campton, New Hampshire. Lois was educated at the University of New Hampshire and Mary Hitchcock Hospital in Hanover, NH, and received a B.S. and M.T. (ASCP) degrees. She was employed by Westerly, RI and Holden hospitals.
She spent much of her life working as a full time Mother for her four children. This involved miles of driving, hours of waiting and most importantly being at home when the children got home from school. At that time she would be sitting, often with a cup of coffee, available to listen to whatever her children had to say. Lois was a good listener.
Lois was very active in church work at the First Congregational Church of Holden, where she was a longtime choir member, Deacon, Sunday School Teacher and Superintendent; and later, at the Oakham Congregational Church, as a Deacon. For many years she volunteered at the Holden Cong. Church Corner Shop and in recreation at the Holden Nursing Home. She enjoyed traveling, camping and dancing with her husband. Other interests were gardening, reading, quilting, visiting with friends and caring for family pets.
A memorial service is planned for 1 p.m. on Saturday, November 7th, in the Oakham Congregational Church, 4 Coldbrook Road, Oakham. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Lois' memory be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Massachusetts Chapter, 311 Arsenal Street, Watertown, MA 02472. Funeral arrangements are under the care of Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden.
