George L. Mcgovern

PAXTON – George L. McGovern, 88, of Paxton, died Sunday, April 1, 2007 in the Fairlawn Hospital and Rehabilitation Center, Worcester.

He leaves his wife of 60 years, Madeline L. (Girouard) McGovern; two daughters, Susan O’Donoghue and her husband James of Paxton and Jeanne Borysewicz and her husband Walter of Berlin, CT; 10 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren. Two sisters, Marion Nichols and Martha Lantinen, predeceased him. He was born in Putnam, Connecticut, son of Thomas F. McGovern and Agnes Stone, and has lived in Paxton for 83 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II serving in the European, African and Middle Eastern theatre. He was a graduate of Worcester Boys Trade.

Mr. McGovern worked for N.E. Telephone Company for 42 years, retiring as Superintendent in 1982. He was also the Paxton Town Clerk for 23 years, retiring in 1983. He was a long time member and sang in the choir at the First Congregational Church in Paxton, member of the Verizon Pioneers, member and past president of the Sons of Paxton, member of the American Legion Post 306 in Paxton, and was a volunteer firefighter in Paxton for many years. He enjoyed summering with his family in Wells, Maine where in drove the trolley in Ogunquit. He was an avid Red Sox, Patriots and Celtics fan.

Family and friends are invited to a memorial service for Mr. McGovern at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 4th, in the First Congregational Church of Paxton, 1 Church Street. Burial will be private in Mooreland Cemetery, Paxton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Congregational Church of Paxton, 1 Church St., Paxton, MA 01612. Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden, is directing arrangements.
