RUTLAND/HUBBARDSTON – Karin L. (Kennedy) Nivala, 74, of Old Princeton Road, Hubbardston and formerly of Rutland, passed away under the loving care of her family and the staff at the Holy Trinity Eastern Orthodox Rehabilitation Center on Saturday, March 26, 2011.
Her husband Donald Nivala, died in 1988. She leaves two sons, Bruce E. LaBoffa and his wife Andrea and Eric R. Bigelow and his “FW” and best friend Lisa (Fife) Lange, all of Rutland; three daughters, Pamela K. (LaBoffa) Banach and her closest friend Alan of Medford, Cindy L. (LaBoffa) Purcell and her husband Ted of Rutland and Elisa J. (Bigelow) Borowy of Worcester; a brother, Wallace B. Kennedy and his wife Marion of Brookfield; 8 grandchildren, Jodi, Mark, Peter, Leighton, Michael, Tanner, Evelyn and Heath; 2 great-grandchildren, Nova and Silas; a niece and two nephews. A son, Brian K. LaBoffa died in 2005 and her former husband, Robert L. Bigelow of Rutland, died in 2006.
Karin was born on January 9, 1937 in Worcester, daughter of Robert and Lydia N. (Person) Kennedy, and lived in Gardner and over 30 years in Rutland before moving to Hubbardston five years ago. She attended May Street School in Worcester and was a graduate of Commerce High School. In her youth, Karin enjoyed tap dancing and singing, playing the piano, racing cars and adventure. She later enjoyed cooking, interior decorating, giving home perms and haircuts, playing Pitch and Cribbage, sharing jokes and spending time with her family. She earned the highest degree in “domestic engineering” and was on several bowling leagues. Along with her husband, she owned and operated the Chair City Steam Bath in Gardner for many years and was a former member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Worcester.
Karin will be remembered for the sparkle in her eyes, beautiful dimples, her personality, quick wit and undying charm.
Friends and family are invited to attend calling hours on Tuesday, March 29th, from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. Karin’s funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 30th in the First Congregational Church of Rutland, 264 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Rutland. Burial will be in Rural Cemetery, Rutland. Honoring Karin’s wishes, flowers are to be omitted and donations may be made to The Smile Train, P.O. Box 96231, Washington, D.C. 20090-6231.
