WORCESTER – Lillian “Libby” Katzenson, age 89, died peacefully in her sleep on January 21, 2022 in the Oasis at Dodge Park, Worcester, MA.
Libby was fortunate to have two loves in her life and was predeceased by her first husband of 30 years, Merton “Babe” Furhman and her second husband of 36 years, Arthur Katzenson. She leaves her children, Lisa Cotton of Shrewsbury, Howard Furhman and his wife, Neli DaSilva of Worcester, and Herbert Furhman and his wife, Liba of New Milford, CT; grandchildren, Meredith, wife of Robert Smith, Myke Furhman and his wife, Lori Lang, and Avi Furhman; great-grandchildren, Diana, Josephine, Samuel, Mattheus and Julia; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and “the friends.” She was predeceased by her sisters, Sophie Richmond and Ann Nore and her brother, Harry Morse.
Born in Worcester on February 27, 1932, the youngest daughter of Sadie Zach and Nathan Moscovitz, Libby was a life-long resident of Worcester, was a graduate of Commerce High School and worked for a short time at the family’s hardware business.
Libby was always busy – whether it was raising three children and caring for her household, sending birthday and anniversary cards, her favorite pastime of shopping, or volunteering at Beit Shalom’s Tuesday luncheons, and the Jewish Home. Up at the crack of dawn, she’d get a head start on making dinner before she went out for her day’s adventure. Dinner was always on the table for five, and she would make sure that everyone would eat and eat and eat.
Libby loved to travel – she went to Italy to Alaska, Greece, Egypt, Israel, the Grand Canyon, Palm Springs, Nantasket Beach and Cape Cod. She enjoyed the theater, concerts and going out to dinner.
But most of all she loved her family and friends. Her home was a gathering place for them all. They would hang in the den while she was in the kitchen serving up her famous sweet-and-sour meatballs, chicken soup, veal parmigiana and chopped liver.
She was a longtime member of Congregation Beth Israel and Temple Emanuel/Sinai; a lifetime member of Jewish Health Care and its Ladies Auxiliary, of Haddasah, the National Council of Jewish Women, and ORT. She was a member of Jewish Family Services, and the Ladies Auxiliary of Jewish War Veterans.
