Lewis 'Lew' A. Caola

WEST BOYLSTON – Lewis A. Caola, 85, of Bunker Hill Parkway, passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side on Thursday, December 16, 2010, in UMass Memorial Healthcare-Memorial Campus, Worcester.

He leaves his wife and best friend of 60 years, Ellen J. (McMullon) Caola; a son, Robert L. Caola of Taunton; three daughters, MaryAnn McFarland and her husband Wayne of Sterling, Cathleen E. O'Brien and her husband Jack of Holden, and Christine M. Caola of West Boylston; a sister, Sophie Sweeney of Worcester; eight grandchildren, Kimberley, R.J., Laurie, Bryan, Kerry, Katie, Sean, and Amy; two great-grandchildren, Luke and Cameron; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Frank and Henry Caola, and a sister, Doris Sulkoski.

Lew was born in Somerville, son of John and Anna (Bonapace) Caola, and has lived in West Boylston for over 54 years. He was a graduate of St. Clement's High School in Somerville, and in 1943, joined the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of World War II serving aboard the USS Numitor and USS General A.E. Anderson in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre. In 1947, he and his brothers established Reliable Grinding on Portland Street in Worcester; and in the 1950s, moved the business to Park Avenue as Caola Brothers where he worked as a locksmith for over 50 years.

He was an active member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Church where he served many years on the Parish Council and Finance Committees and was a church usher. He was also a member of the West Boylston Civic Club, the Harold N. Keith American Legion Post 204 in West Boylston and was instrumental in establishing its baseball league. Lewis always enjoyed his work, and most of all, he loved spending time with his family.

Friends and family are invited to attend calling hours from 2 to 5 P.M. on Sunday, December 19th, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 A.M. on Monday, December 20th, in Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, 111 Worcester Street, West Boylston. Burial will follow in Mt. Vernon Cemetery, West Boylston. In lieu of flowers, donations in Lew's memory may be made to Our Lady of Good Counsel Church Memorial Fund, 111 Worcester Street, West Boylston, MA 01583.
