STERLING - Leonel Francis Maloney, 38, died from gunshot wounds in Springfield, MA on Monday, March 20, 2023, the victim of an unsolved homicide. His family is heartbroken. He will be dearly missed.

Leo was born in Bogota, Colombia, was adopted at age 5 by his loving parents, Robert and Joyce Maloney, and moved to Sterling, MA. He was a bright and happy child with an easy smile. He had a deep love for his family. He enjoyed many outdoor activities, including family parties at his grandparents' pool and swimming at the lake, fishing or skiing in Maine. He was fond of all animals, especially the family's cats and dogs.

Leo attended Sterling public schools, St. Peter Marian Jr. High, St. John's H.S. and Mt. Wachusett Community College. He was an enthusiastic athlete participating in football, basketball and baseball and enjoyed snowboarding and waterskiing. Over the years he worked as a snowboard instructor, a lifeguard and more recently as a landscaper.

Leo's greatest love was for his daughter, Ava Maloney. Nothing brought him more joy than being with her. Along with his parents and daughter, he is survived by, and will be lovingly missed by, his brothers: John Maloney of MA; Nilson Maloney and his fiancée, Annette Colon and their son, Matteo of FL; James Maloney and Gabrielle Maloney and their daughters, Rhiley and Rhory of NH; a sister, Sandra Benhamou and husband, Amine and their daughters, Layla and Norah of MA; grandfather, Donald Maloney, Sr. of MA; many loving aunts, uncles, and cousins. Leo was predeceased by his paternal grandmother June Maloney, maternal grandparents William and Frances Chestnut, aunts Marie Johnson and Nancy Maloney Thomas, his uncle Michael Callahan and cousins, Sarah Maloney and Matthew Maloney.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Monday, April 3rd, at St. Richard of Chichester Church in Sterling. Interment will take place privately at a later date.

Leonel struggled for many years with alcoholism, participating in residential and outpatient treatment programs. Those wishing to contribute in Leonel's memory may consider donating to Dismas House of Worcester, P.O. Box 30125, Worcester, MA 01603 to support Dismas Family Farm in Oakham. Funeral arrangements are under the care of Miles-Sterling Funeral & Tribute Center, 100 Worcester Rd., Sterling.
