Leona A. (Lanteigne) Blanchflower

January 17, 1934 — October 30, 2014

LANCASTER – Leona A. (Lanteigne) Blanchflower, 80, of Lancaster, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 30, 2014, under the loving care of her family and the staff at the Life Care Center of Leominster after an illness. Born in Shirley, Leona was the daughter of Leo and Alice (Gionet) Lanteigne and lived her formative years in Leominster.

Leona was a graduate of Leominster High School and worked as a switchboard operator for New England Telephone Co. In the mid 1950’s, Leona met and fell in love with Richard C. Blanchflower of Lancaster. After marrying in 1955, they lived briefly in Leominster before moving to Lancaster in 1960 where they began their 54 years together raising a family of six children.

Leona supported her husband’s business as a sounding board and advisor, and personally owned and operated an antique shop in Leominster in her spare time. An avid golfer and 30-year member at Oak Hill Country Club in Fitchburg, Leona took an active role as the event coordinator for the women’s golf program. Her other interests included skiing the slopes of Okemo Mountain in Vermont, traveling throughout New England, Florida, the Caribbean, Ireland and Europe and was known for her natural talent as an oil painter. In her younger years, she belonged to several drama clubs and acted in local plays. She was engaging, high-spirited and often found herself “the life of the party". Describing Leona as feisty was an understatement. Although her later years had their challenges, she remained faithful and determined to be the best wife, mom, Grammy and friend.

Her beloved husband, Richard C. Blanchflower, Sr., died in 2009. She is survived by her five children, Richard C. Blanchflower, Jr. of Leominster, John M. Blanchflower and his wife, Patricia of Sterling, Michael Blanchflower of Fitchburg, Bambi Marble of Leominster and Laura Swanson and her husband, Douglas of Westminster; two sisters, Jacqueline Tourigny and Norma Masse both of Leominster; 13 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren with two on the way; her son-in-law, Robert O’Connor of Bolton; and many nephews and nieces. Besides her husband, Leona is predeceased by her daughter, Diane M. O’Connor who died in 1994, and her brother, Peter Lanteigne.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Leona’s family between the hours of 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, November 2, at the Miles-Sterling Funeral and Tribute Center, 100 Worcester Road (Rte. 12), Sterling. A funeral service honoring Leona’s life will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, November 3, at the funeral home. Burial will be held privately at Eastwood Cemetery in Lancaster. In lieu of flowers, online memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Global Initiative, Alzglobalinitiave.org.
