STERLING - Leo T. Doherty, Jr., 77, beloved husband of Patricia (Dewaele) Doherty, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his loving family, on Monday, November 28, 2022. Leo, who went by Terry, was born and raised in Worcester, the son of the late Leo and Alice (Frostholm) Doherty.
Terry attended North High School in Worcester, and was a graduate of Harvard University, earning a bachelor's degree in 1966. He furthered his education the following year at Yale University, where he received his master's degree. He served for several years in the Army National Guard. From 1967 to 2003, Terry taught foreign languages, including French, Spanish and Latin, to the students at North High School. During his tenure, he became head of the foreign language department. He also served as yearbook advisor and coached the girls' soccer team. In his spare time, he coached his sons' soccer and baseball teams for several years. He was an avid Red Sox fan, and each summer took his sons and mother to games at Fenway Park.
Terry and Patricia enjoyed kayaking in Gloucester and collecting sea glass there with their grandchildren. Terry could often be found cheering at his grandchildren's soccer games, and when at home working on difficult crossword puzzles. His sarcasm, puns, and wonderful sense of humor will be remembered by many.
He will be lovingly missed by his wife of fifty-five years, Patricia; his two sons, Michael of Los Angeles and Timothy of Billerica; Timothy's wife, Julie, and their two children, Taryn and Dylan; his sister, Alice de Beaumont of New York; and many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to gather with Terry's family from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 10 in the Miles-Sterling Funeral & Tribute Center, 100 Worcester Road, Sterling.
