HUBBARDSTON – John L. Berthold, 66, of 12 Barre Road, died Wednesday, May 7, 2008 in UMass Memorial Healthcare, Worcester, after a long illness.
He leaves his wife of 40 years, Linda A. (Duncan) Berthold; a son, Robert A. Berthold of Hubbardston; a daughter, Robin L. Hammond and her husband Thomas of Charlotte, NC; a granddaughter, Elainie Hammond; two brothers, Robert Berthold of Waxhaw, NC and David Berthold of Saugus; two sisters, Barbara Cerbone of Salisbury and Patricia LaCroix of Pineville, NC; many nephews and nieces. He was born and raised in Saugus, son of Lester and Bridget (Campbell) Berthold, and lived in North Andover for six years before moving to Hubbardston 32 years ago. He was a graduate of Saugus High School, Northeast Institute of Technology and Wentworth Institute of Technology, both in Boston.
Mr. Berthold was a U.S. Navy Veteran and served during the Vietnam era aboard the USS Boston and during the "Bay of Pigs Invasion" in 1961. He was Operations Manager and Chief Engineer for New England Development in Worcester and previously he worked for Beacon Companies in Boston. He was a member and former chairman of the Hubbardston Planning Board and a member of the Lions Club of Hubbardston. He loved horses, was an accomplished equestrian and animal lover, and was a supportive and loving husband and father. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, May 12th, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. A memorial service and celebration of life will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 13th, in the Heritage Bible Chapel, Brook Station Road, Princeton.
